Connecting essay - 4

This first photo is one that I found on the internet it is a light drawing of a collection of small lights, to me it looks more like the lights were static and that the camera was moving as the light trails don't seem to have any kind of pattern to them and are very random, but at the same time looks like it was well planned and thought through.  It shows colour and line really well with the bright orange/yellow light which also creates strong contrast with the dark background and foreground.

This second photo is one that I myself have taken, I was essentially just taking photos of some distant lights while playing with my camera settings on my way home from my 10th shoot.  I think some of these are really cool and a little trippy, the one below is one of my favourite from the set with the mass of messy light trails everywhere in the frame.  My photo clearly shows colour, line and contrast through the mass of orange, yellow and white light trails against the dark black background.

These two photos relate in the fact that they show pretty much the same thing, a mass of lines made by using a long shutter speed and some bright lights and in my case at least doing so while walking(a.k.a not keeping the camera steady).  They are also related through the formal elements that are portrayed/presented within each image; colour, line and contrast.

Connecting essay - 3

This first photograph is one that I have found on the internet it clearly shows form with the directional light coming from the top right going down across the subject.  Its black and white nature creates more contrast between the light and dark areas and emphasises the 3D nature of the model in the photo.

This second photo is one that I have taken myself it shows form quite well with the light coming across the photo from the right hand side.  I think that the position of the light being slightly in front of my model so that the majority of her face is still lit up at least a little bit, combined with the black background contrasting slightly with her hair makes the photo look quite professional.  The black and white nature of this photograph also helps to emphasise the form by removing any colour which can distract from the light and dark contrast.

These to photos relate most obviously through the fact that they are both black and white but also through the fact that they both use a female model and show form with some high contrasting light and dark areas and the use of a dark coloured background.

Connecting essay - 2

This first photo is one I found on the internet of a light drawing photo that has been done in a studio or somewhere dark without the use of a flash or other light source to shown the background or foreground.  The photo shown colour and line and has a messy unorganised composition although it does have a fairly well defined even border that the light trails don't enter around the edge of the frame.

This second photo is one I myself took and it shows an array of different colours some of which have blended together to create additional shades or colours within the photo. The composition was not planned at all before I did this it was very much just take long exposure photos while waving glow sticks around in front of the camera and so I ended up with a bunch of photos that had a messy composition. This photo also shows line through some of the more defined/exposed parts of the photo and also portrays shape to a certain degree although it is not overly clear and you do have to look quite carefully.

Both of these photographs relate mainly through the fact that they are both of the similar things a messy light drawing with no real intention or outcome, they also relate through their individual use of the formal elements of colour and line although my one is more colourful while the other has more definition in its lines.

Connecting essay - 1

This first photo is one that I have found on the internet, it is a photo taken by Michael Bosanko a well known light drawing photographer.  It clearly shows colour through the use of the different coloured lights used within the light drawing near the bottom of the frame.  Line and shape are also shown through the light drawing with the Ying Yang (a circle) at the front of the drawing.

This second photo is one that I myself have taken colour is shown through the bright red line of the light drawing but also the yellow orange that can be seen through the trees in the background and the faint green and brown of the ground.  Line is also shown through the drawing that I have done as well as a few fairly wonky and squashed circles and rounded triangles.

Bosanko's and my photo relate through the fact that both of them are of the same thing, light drawing, but they also have connections through the formal elements that they portray; colour, line and shape all shown through their respective light drawings and although the compositions differ quite drastically I feel that they both give off a very similar other worldly feel of something that shouldn't logically be there but still fits.

Exam plan

For my exam I am planning to do a light drawing studio shoot and a location shoot and then do all of my editing in one go.  For this I will need a model which will be one of my friends as well as some bright torches and glow sticks which I already have.  My studio shoot will be done first thing and should take no longer than an hour.  The location shoot will possibly be split in two and shot around the college and/or at my house, this will probably take slightly longer than the studio shoot but I estimate no more than 2 hours which should leave me with approx. 2 hours to edit which is plenty of time.

Shoot 10 - Work Diary

For this shoot I went over to Harlow common with a couple of friends and a whole load of sparklers and essentially just played about with the sparklers while taking photographs using a long exposure, a low ISO and the flash for most of them.  I essentially have two sets of photos in one; one set with the sparklers and my friends and the other set of the lights and horizon on the way back.

This is probably one of the best photographs from the set with the sparklers, I think that the red spark finishes of this photo as they were really red and bask everything in a red glow.  This photo shows colour as well as movement.

This is one of the good ones from the second set with the lights, they were achieved by creating intentional camera shake while using a long exposure.  This photo shows colour and movement like the previous one.

To improve upon this I could potentially get some external flashes that are fairly powerful so that I get more background included within the photo or try introducing some camera shake into the photos with the sparklers that I would normally take using a tripod to create ghostly blur of things as well as the light trails.
